(19강) 인생에 대한 탄식

<본문>

1.이 땅에 사는 인생에게 힘든 노동이 있지 아니하겠느냐 그의 날이 품꾼의 날과 같지 아니하겠느냐 

2.종은 저녁 그늘을 몹시 바라고 품꾼은 그의 삯을 기다리나니 

3.이와 같이 내가 여러 달째 고통을 받으니 고달픈 밤이 내게 작정되었구나 

4.내가 누울 때면 말하기를 언제나 일어날까, 언제나 밤이 갈까 하며 새벽까지 이리 뒤척, 저리 뒤척 하는구나 

5.내 살에는 구더기와 흙 덩이가 의복처럼 입혀졌고 내 피부는 굳어졌다가 터지는구나 

6.나의 날은 베틀의 북보다 빠르니 희망 없이 보내는구나 

7.내 생명이 한낱 바람 같음을 생각하옵소서 나의 눈이 다시는 행복을 보지 못하리이다 

8.나를 본 자의 눈이 다시는 나를 보지 못할 것이고 주의 눈이 나를 향하실지라도 내가 있지 아니하리이다 

9.구름이 사라져 없어짐 같이 스올로 내려가는 자는 다시 올라오지 못할 것이오니 

10.그는 다시 자기 집으로 돌아가지 못하겠고 자기 처소도 다시 그를 알지 못하리이다 

 

<설교>

사람이 세상을 사는 동안의 시간과 그 시간 속에서의 생활과 다양한 경험의 모든 것, 즉 일생을 가리켜서 인생이라고 말합니다. 그리고 인생의 가치와 의미, 목적에 대해 생각하고 나름대로의 견해를 갖는 것을 인생관으로 설명할 수 있습니다. 그리고 인생에 대해 어떻게 생각하는가에 따라 ‘낙천주의’‘비관주의’‘현실주의’‘이상주의’등으로 나누기도 합니다. 

 

 

여러분은 어떤 인생관을 가지고 살아갑니까? 여러분께 ‘인생이란 무엇인가?’라고 묻는다면 어떻게 답하겠습니까? 솔직히 우리는 인생에 대해 깊이 생각하지 않고 산다고 할 수 있습니다. 또한 ‘내 인생관은 이것이다’라고 말할 뚜렷한 인생관을 갖고 사는 사람도 드물 것입니다. 하루하루 사는 대로 살아왔고 살아가는 것이 대개의 현실이기 때문입니다. 

 

 

그러다가 힘든 문제에 부딪혀서 심적 고통에 시달리거나, 지금까지의 삶의 시간에 대해 허무감을 느낄 때 ‘사는 것이 뭔가?’라는 자조적 태도를 보이기도 합니다. 뜻대로 되지 않은 인생에 대한 실망이라고 할 수 있고 남들처럼 가치 있는 것을 이루지 못했다는 스스로에 대한 자괴감이라고도 할 수 있을 것입니다.

 

 

욥도 자기 인생에 대해 이런 반응을 보이고 있음을 볼 수 있습니다. 생일을 저주한 것도 그렇거니와 “이 땅에 사는 인생에게 힘든 노동이 있지 아니하겠느냐 그의 날이 품꾼의 날과 같지 아니하겠느냐 종은 저녁 그늘을 몹시 바라고 품꾼은 그의 삯을 기다리나니 이와 같이 내가 여러 달째 고통을 받으니 고달픈 밤이 내게 작정되었구나”(1-3절)는 말에서도 욥이 자기 인생을 어떻게 생각하는지를 느낄 수 있습니다. 

 

 

그런데 한편으로는 욥의 그러한 말들이 우리를 의아하게 하는 것도 있습니다. 그것은 욥처럼 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자라는 말을 들을 정도의 신앙인이라면 어떤 상황에서도 원망과 불평을 하지 않고 인내해야 한다는 생각이 있기 때문입니다. 

 

 

하지만 욥에 대해서 그러한 의문을 가질 필요가 없습니다. 신앙은 어떤 상황에서도 하나님을 원망하지 않고 참고 견디는 것이 아니기 때문입니다. 오히려 원망과 불평을 통해서 자신의 약함을 깨닫고 하나님의 능력이 아니면 존재할 수 없음을 알고 지금까지 살게 하신 은혜에 감사하는 것이 신앙인 것입니다. 

 

 

인생에게 힘든 노동이 있다는 욥의 말은 인간의 피할 수 없는 역사고 운명이라고 할 수 있습니다. 물론 사람마다 노동의 정도와 형편은 다르지만 인생 자체가 힘든 노동의 연속이라는 것에 대해서는 부인할 수 없습니다. 

 

 

욥이 자기 인생에 대해 얼마나 깊이 절망하는가는 6,7절의 “나의 날은 베틀의 북보다 빠르니 희망 없이 보내는구나 내 생명이 한낱 바람 같음을 생각하옵소서 나의 눈이 다시는 행복을 보지 못하리이다”는 말에서도 드러납니다. 자기 인생에 다시는 행복이 없을거라는 말은 한편으로 생각하면 아예 인생에 대해 포기한 듯한 느낌을 주기 때문입니다. 

 

 

욥의 현실은 “내 살에는 구더기와 흙 덩이가 의복처럼 입혀졌고 내 피부는 굳어졌다가 터지는구나”(5절)는 말에서 알 수 있는 것처럼 비참 그 자체입니다. 자식과 함께 모든 소유를 잃어버렸고 몸 또한 종기로 인해서 구더기가 생기고 피부도 굳어졌다가 터지는 몰골이 되었습니다. 

 

 

사실 욥과 같은 고통을 겪는 사람은 현재에도 많습니다. 병원을 가보면 그것을 실감할 수 있을 것입니다. 우리는 그러한 사람을 만나면 동정의 마음은 있으면서도 나의 현실로 받아들이지는 않습니다. 실제 나의 현실이 아니기 때문입니다. 그럼에도 분명한 사실은 모든 사람의 몸이 썩어 흙으로 돌아가는 때가 반드시 온다는 것입니다. 이런 이유로 우리는 욥의 인생과 무관한 길에 있지 않는 것입니다.

 

 

누구의 인생도 편안함만 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그래서 인생의 현실은 언제나 우리의 기대와 다르게 펼쳐지는 것입니다. 하지만 중요한 것은 우리의 기대와 다르게 펼쳐지는 인생에 하나님이 작정하신 일이 담겨 있다는 것입니다. 따라서 욥도 하나님의 일하심 가운데 있는 것이고 결국 하나님을 만나고 하나님을 알게 됨으로서 회개를 경험하게 되는 것입니다. 

 

 

이렇게 생각해 보십시오. 만약 욥이 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자로 인정을 받는 삶이 계속되었다면, 즉 지금과 같은 고통이 없었다면 그의 인생은 어땠을까요? 당연히 고통을 겪지 않고 열심히 하나님을 경외하며 범죄 하지 않는 신앙인으로 살다가 인생을 마쳤을 것입니다. 

 

 

우리는 그러한 인생을 신자로서 가장 이상적인 것으로 생각하고 원하기도 합니다. 그 목적으로 하나님을 찾으면서 ‘신앙생활 열심히 할 테니까 평안을 누리게 해 주십시오’라고 기도하는 것 아니겠습니까?

 

 

사람들은 평안을 누리다가 천국에 가는 것을 신앙의 성공인 것처럼 생각하지만 그것을 신앙의 전부로 생각할 수는 없습니다. 신앙의 이유와 목적이 천국을 보장받고 평안을 누리는 것에 있다면 십자가에 흘리신 예수님의 피의 무게는 깃털처럼 가벼워 질 것이고, 그 가치는 티끌과 같은 것으로 추락할 것입니다. 

 

 

욥이 비록 고통을 겪고 있지만 그 고통으로 인해서 하나님을 경외하고 악에서 떠난 자로 살았을 때 드러나지 않았던 것이 드러나게 됩니다. 그것은 욥과 같은 사람에게서 생일에 대한 저주가 나오고 인생에 대한 한탄과 탄식이 나온다는 것입니다. 

 

 

이것은 ‘욥도 그러한데 우리도 어쩔 수 없지 않는가’라는 식으로 우리의 죄를 정당화하라는 뜻이 아니라 신앙은 범죄 하지 않고, 고통의 삶에서도 자기 의지를 발휘해서 참고 견디는 것을 의미하지 않음을 생각할 수 있어야 한다는 것입니다.

 

 

욥의 친구들은 이것을 알지 못했기에 현재의 형편이 고통인가 평안인가로 하나님과의 관계를 저울질 하고 판단하는 잘못을 드러낸 것입니다. 그래서 재앙이 없고 평안한 자신들의 신앙은 문제가 없고 욥의 신앙이 잘못된 것으로 생각하였기에 욥을 범죄 한 자로 판단하며 회개를 촉구한 것입니다.

 

 

8-10절의 “나를 본 자의 눈이 다시는 나를 보지 못할 것이고 주의 눈이 나를 향하실지라도 내가 있지 아니하리이다 구름이 사라져 없어짐 같이 스올로 내려가는 자는 다시 올라오지 못할 것이오니 그는 다시 자기 집으로 돌아가지 못하겠고 자기 처소도 다시 그를 알지 못하리이다”는 말을 보십시오.

 

 

인생에 대한 실망과 절망이 가득 담긴 욥의 심정이 느껴지지 않습니까? 그런데 이것이 우리가 가는 인생의 적나라한 현실입니다. 누구라고 자기 인생에서 실망과 절망을 느낄 것이고 하나님은 우리를 그러한 길로 이끌어 가시는 것입니다. 따라서 신앙이 좋다는 이유로 고통이 면제 되지 않음을 알아야 합니다. 이것이 기독교인들의 큰 착각이기도 합니다. 하나님을 잘 믿으면 고통과 어려움이 면제되고 평안한 삶을 보장 받을 것이라는 착각으로 인해서 하나님이 주고자 하는 유익을 놓치게 되는 것입니다.

 

 

편안함이 하나님이 함께 하시는 증거가 아니듯 고통도 하나님이 함께 하시지 않은 증거가 아닙니다. 그렇기 때문에 신앙을 인생의 편안함과 고통으로 나누어 평가하는 것은 하나님께서 우리의 인생을 어떤 뜻으로 다루시는가를 생각하지 않는 것이 될 뿐입니다.

 

 

욥의 고난이 욥에게 아무런 유익도 주지 못했을까요? 42장에서 욥은 자신의 무지를 고백하며 하나님께 회개하게 됩니다. 이것이 고난에 담긴 유익입니다. 하나님께서 고난을 도구로 하여 욥으로 하여금 그 속의 모든 것을 토해내게 하신 후에 다가오신 것입니다. 그렇게 하지 않으면 욥은 하나님을 경외하고 죄에서 떠나 살았던 자신만을 생각했을 것입니다.

 

 

때문에 신자는 하나님이 누구신가를 알아갈수록 자신의 인생에서 하나님의 일하심이 선명하게 드러남을 경험하게 됩니다. 하나님을 간절히 찾아야 할 필요성을 느끼지 못했던 평범했던 인생에도 정작 하나님이 함께 하시고 도우시고 인도하셨음을 실감하게 되면서 하나님을 고백하게 되는 것입니다. 신자는 이것으로 하나님의 살아계심을 증거 하는 것입니다. 

 

 

그런 점에서 보면 지금의 기독교인은 ‘하나님은 살아계신다’고 말하면서도 오히려 삶으로는 ‘하나님은 죽었다’고 외치는 것처럼 보입니다. 지금의 욥이 그와 같다 할 것이고 우리 역시 인생에 대한 기대가 무너질 때 수시로 그러한 모습을 보일 것입니다. 

 

 

우리에게 필요한 것은 인생을 바라보는 것이 아니라 하나님을 바라보는 것입니다. 인생은 하나님의 손에 있으니 우리에게 유익되는 길로 인도하신다는 사실만 믿으면 됩니다.

 

 

Chapter 19

  

Lamentation For Life

  

Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling?

As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work:

So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me.

When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day.

My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become loathsome.

My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.

O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.

The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.

As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.

He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more. (Job 7:1-10 KJV)

  

(Sermon)

  

Life is the whole span when and where one spends one's time with various experiences. Additionally, it is called the philosophy of life that one has one's own value, meaning and purpose of life. It could be divided into 'optimism', 'pessimism', 'realism' and 'idealism' depending on one's point of view. 

  

What kind of point of view do you have for life? What would you say if you were asked, 'what is life'? It might be true that we are living, not thinking of such. It could also be right to say that few live with such views because we just live as whatever brings us daily, which is our reality.

  

Then, when we face difficulties and feel empty of life, we would put ourselves down by saying, 'why would I have to live?' It can be called the disappointment of ourselves, not fulfilling what we want or sense of shame, compared to others. 

  

Job is showing us such in the passage. We can see what he thinks of his own life in Verses 1 to 3, "Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling? As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work: So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me" as well as his curse on his birthday, which we have already seen before.

  

On the one hand, what he says somehow confounds us because we might easily conclude that such person like Job, revering God and eschewing evil, shouldn't complain against God in any circumstances. 

  

However, our conclusion of Job described above is wrong because faith is not to bear no matter what given situations are, but it is rather to realize how wicked we are through such complaints and we can't live a moment without the power of God and give thanks for His grace given to us until now.

  

It is our fate that we all live under harsh labor as Job said. Of course, the amount of labor can individually be different, but no one can deny that life itself is the continuation of labor. 

  

Verses 6 to 7 tell us how despairing he is, "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope. O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good." He makes himself sound like one giving up on life. 

  

His reality is depicted in Verse 5, "My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become loathsome." It is tragedy itself. He lost all possessions, including his children, and his skin is all broken, looking loathsome. 

  

In fact, there are many people today suffering like Job. We can find them in hospitals. When we see them, although we sympathize with them, we don't accept them as our reality because we are not in their situations. Nevertheless, what is for sure is that there will be a time when all go back to dust. For this reason, our walk on life is not different from that of Job.

  

There is no one having only comforts in life. That's why life goes unexpectedly. Yet, we mustn't forget that there is God's determination in this unexpected life. Thus, Job is in the work of God, resulting in the fact that he meets God and experiences the true repentance. 

  

Let us think this way. If he didn't have the afflictions he has now and had the same kind of life, revering God and avoiding wickedness, how would he be? No doubt that he would have lived his life without the pain and died as one, looking up to God and not sinning. 

  

We think this kind of life is idealistic and wish to live like that. Don't we come to God for that reason and pray like, "I will live my life for thee by faith, so give me a peaceful life"?

  

Many think it is a successful life that one lives such life and go to heaven after death, but it is not all for life with faith. If the purpose of faith were to guarantee our life for salvation to go to heaven after death and have comforts as living, the weight of the blood of Jesus Christ would be considered light like a feather and the value of it would plummet down to dirt. 

  

Even though Job is experiencing the afflictions, some things that were hidden when he was revering God and eschewing evil are being exposed through his experiencing them, which are the curse of his birthday from such person like Job and lamentation for life. 

  

I don't mean to justify our sin by saying, "Job is like that, so why wouldn't we?", but I mean that we ought to know that faith is not for sinning not or bearing all sufferings with our strong will. 

  

Since Job's friends didn't know that, they judged that Job was not in the relationship with God by seeing what conditions he is in whether sufferings or comforts, which is wrong. That's why they thought they were in the right relationship with God, having no disasters like Job but peace, and urged Job to repent. 

  

In Verses 8 to 10, it says, "The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not. As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more."

  

Can't you feel full of the disappointment and despair Job is carrying in his heart? Yet, this is the very reality our life is heading for. Everyone will be disappointed with oneself and despair, which God leads us all. Thus, we must remember there is no one exempt from such even if one lives a perfect life with faith. Many christians are mistaken on this, thinking they are guaranteed for comfortable and painless lives as long as they have devotion in life for God, causing them to lose what God has prepared for them.

  

Neither comforts nor afflictions are the evidence God be with us. Thus, if we judge our lives by comforts and afflictions, we come to neglect the will of God for our lives. 

  

Do you think the experiences of his afflictions give him nothing? In Chapter 42, he comes to confess his ignorance of God and repent. God has appeared to him after He let Job pour out everything he has in his heart. Otherwise, he would have thought of himself, adoring God and sinning not until the moment of his death.

  

Therefore, the more believers get to know who God is, the clearer they see how God is working in their lives. They come to confess that God was with them to help and guide them even when they were having a peaceful life, not needing God. Believers testify God by this realization. 

  

In this sense, it seems that christians in modern Christianity are saying, "God is alive", in words only, but "God is dead", in actions. Job in the passage is like that and we also show ourselves like that when our life doesn't move in the way that we want it to be.

  

What we need is not to look ourselves but to look up to God. We are simply to believe in God, who is leading us with His utmost will for His name's sake!
