<본문>

13.지혜와 권능이 하나님께 있고 계략과 명철도 그에게 속하였나니 

14.그가 헐으신즉 다시 세울 수 없고 사람을 가두신즉 놓아주지 못하느니라 

15.그가 물을 막으신즉 곧 마르고 물을 보내신즉 곧 땅을 뒤집나니 

16.능력과 지혜가 그에게 있고 속은 자와 속이는 자가 다 그에게 속하였으므로 

17.모사를 벌거벗겨 끌어 가시며 재판장을 어리석은 자가 되게 하시며 

18.왕들이 맨 것을 풀어 그들의 허리를 동이시며 

19.제사장들을 벌거벗겨 끌어 가시고 권력이 있는 자를 넘어뜨리시며 

20.충성된 사람들의 말을 물리치시며 늙은 자들의 판단을 빼앗으시며 

21.귀인들에게 멸시를 쏟으시며 강한 자의 띠를 푸시며 

22.어두운 가운데에서 은밀한 것을 드러내시며 죽음의 그늘을 광명한 데로 나오게 하시며 

23.민족들을 커지게도 하시고 다시 멸하기도 하시며 민족들을 널리 퍼지게도 하시고 다시 끌려가게도 하시며 

24.만민의 우두머리들의 총명을 빼앗으시고 그들을 길 없는 거친 들에서 방황하게 하시며 

25.빛 없이 캄캄한 데를 더듬게 하시며 취한 사람 같이 비틀거리게 하시느니라 

 

<설교>

기독교가 강조하는 ‘믿음으로 사는 삶’이란 무엇일까요? 과연 어떻게 살아야 믿음으로 사는 삶이라고 할 수 있을까요? 어떤 사람은 ‘우리의 삶의 자리에서 하나님과의 만남(인식)이 있으면 그것이 믿음으로 사는 것이 됩니다’라고 말하기도 합니다. 

 

 

그리고 하나님과의 만남이 있는 믿음의 삶을 살게 되면 사랑의 관계들이 시작되면서 미움과 시기와 질투가 사라지고 걱정과 근심이 사라진다고 합니다. 또한 거짓과 죄악 된 모습들이 사라지고 용서와 사랑의 새로운 관계들이 형성되면서 행복하게 되는 것을 믿음으로 사는 삶의 특징으로 말하기도 합니다. 아마 많은 기독교인들이 이러한 말에 익숙할 것입니다. 한국교회에서 흔히 들을 수 있는 보편적인 말이기 때문입니다. 

 

 

과연 그럴까요? 조금만 생각해 보면 그러한 말들은 우리가 직면하는 현실과는 전혀 다르다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 무엇보다도 우리의 삶의 자리에서 하나님과의 만남이 있으면 모든 걱정 근심이 사라진다고 말하는 그 저의가 무엇인지부터 생각해야 합니다. 

 

 

하나님과의 만남을 수단으로 하여 걱정근심이 사라진 행복한 삶을 꿈꾸는 것 자체가 하나님을 알지 못한 것이며 자기중심적인 인간의 모습에 지나지 않습니다. 따라서 설사 그가 하나님을 만났다 해도 그것은 자기 착각일 뿐입니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 우리의 걱정 근심을 사라지게 해서 행복한 삶을 살게 하기 위해 일하지 않기 때문입니다.

 

 

믿음으로 사는 삶이 하나님과의 만남이나 관계와 연관이 있는 것은 사실이지만 그 모든 것은 하나님을 아는 것으로 직결됩니다. 하나님이 누구신가를 알지 못하면서 하나님과의 만남이나 관계를 말할 수는 없기 때문입니다. 

 

 

그런데 하나님이 누구신가를 알고자 하면 할수록 부딪히는 것은 ‘하나님이 누구신지를 모르겠다’는 혼란입니다. 이것을 우리는 지금까지 욥을 통해서 생각해 왔습니다. 

 

 

욥은 13절에서 “지혜와 권능이 하나님께 있고 계략과 명철도 그에게 속하였나니”라고 말합니다. 이것은 여러분도 잘 알고 있고 귀에 익숙한 말일 것입니다. 그런데 그 의미에 대해서 깊이 생각해 보신 적이 있습니까? 

 

 

‘지혜와 권능이 하나님께 있다’이 말이 무슨 뜻일까요? 하나님은 지혜가 있고 권능이 있으시다는 뜻이 되는데, 이것이 우리의 삶과 어떻게 연결되는 것일까요? 지혜와 권능이 하나님께 있다는 것이 우리의 믿음이라면 그 믿음은 우리로 하여금 어떤 삶을 살게 하는지를 아는 것이 중요한 것입니다.

 

 

지혜와 권능이 하나님께 있다면 하나님이 행하신 일로 믿는 우리의 모든 삶은 하나님의 지혜와 권능에 의한 것이 됩니다. 맞습니까? 이것부터 분명히 정립이 되어 있어야 합니다. 하나님의 지혜와 권능에 의한 현실이라면 우리는 현실의 되어진 일을 보고 ‘옳다 그르다’라고 판단할 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 인간에게는 하나님의 지혜에 의한 일을 판단할 지혜가 없기 때문입니다.

 

 

그런데 욥의 친구들은 욥의 현실을 죄로 인한 심판으로 판단합니다. 왜냐하면 하나님의 지혜가 아닌 법의 시각으로 바라보기 때문입니다. 법은 곧 죄를 판단하고 죄에 대해 심판합니다. 욥의 친구들이 지금껏 욥의 현실을 죄로 인한 결과로 몰아 붙였던 것이 바로 법의 시각이었던 것입니다. 이것으로 욥의 친구들은 하나님을 법적 관계에서 믿었음을 알 수 있습니다. 이러한 법적관계에서 상선벌악을 행하는 하나님이 주장되는 것입니다.

 

 

14절의 “그가 헐으신즉 다시 세울 수 없고 사람을 가두신즉 놓아주지 못하느니라”는 말을 보십시오. 조금 이상하다는 생각이 들지 않습니까? 

 

 

기독교인이 생각하는 하나님은 세우시고 놓아주는 분입니다. 다시 말해서 무너진 것을 일으켜 세워주시고 가두어진 자를 놓아주시고, 실패한 자를 성공하게 하시는 하나님이 기독교인들이 구하고 찾는 하나님인 것입니다. 

 

 

그런데 욥은 전혀 다르게 말합니다. 하나님이 헐으신 것을 누가 세울 수 있으며 하나님이 가두신 것을 누가 놓아줄 수 있느냐는 것입니다. 그렇게 욥은 하나님을 헐기도 하고 가두기도 하는 분으로 말합니다. 

 

 

이러한 하나님의 일을 우리의 지혜로 알 수가 없습니다. 따라서 욥의 재앙을 하나님의 지혜와 권능으로 행하신 일로 바라본다면 비록 하나님의 뜻은 알지 못한다 해도 섣불리 죄 때문이라는 말을 할 수 없는 것입니다. 그래서 믿음의 삶이 어려운 것은 모든 것을 하나님의 지혜와 권능에 의한 하나님의 일로 바라본다 해도 하나님이 답을 주시지 않는 현실을 살아가야 하기 때문입니다. 

 

 

15절의 “그가 물을 막으신즉 곧 마르고 물을 보내신즉 곧 땅을 뒤집나니”라는 말도 우리의 생각을 뒤집는다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 일반적으로 생각하고 원하는 풍요의 하나님은 땅을 마르게 하시는 분도, 물을 보내 홍수를 일으키는 분도 아니기 때문입니다. 오히려 반대로 마른 땅에 비를 주시고 홍수가 있는 땅은 마르게 하시는 하나님이 사람들이 마음에 두고 있는 하나님의 일하심이라는 것을 부인하지 않을 것입니다. 

 

 

욥이 하나님에 대해서 이러한 말을 하는 것을 보면 이유가 무엇인지 모르는 재앙을 겪으면서 하나님에 대한 생각에 변화가 있게 된 것이 아닌가 짐작할 수 있습니다. 친구들은 여전히 법적 관계에 머물러 있지만 욥은 법적 관계에서 자신의 현실을 하나님의 지혜에 의한 일하심으로 바라보는 관계로 나아가는 것입니다. 이것이 하나님의 지혜와 권능이 아닐까요?

 

 

지금까지의 내용을 토대로 해서 하나님에 대한 욥의 말을 생각해 보십시오. 어느 말에서도 형통하게 하시고 근심 걱정을 사라지게 하시고 평안을 주시는 하나님은 없습니다. 이것이 욥이 모든 것을 잃고 무너짐을 겪으면서 생각하게 된 하나님입니다.

 

 

23-25절의 “민족들을 커지게도 하시고 다시 멸하기도 하시며 민족들을 널리 퍼지게도 하시고 다시 끌려가게도 하시며 만민의 우두머리들의 총명을 빼앗으시고 그들을 길 없는 거친 들에서 방황하게 하시며 빛 없이 캄캄한 데를 더듬게 하시며 취한 사람 같이 비틀거리게 하시느니라”는 욥이 알아가는 하나님을 생각해 보십시오.

 

 

우리는 나를 커지게 하시는 하나님만을 원하지만 우리의 현실에서 일하시고 만날 수 있는 하나님은 멸하기도 하시는 분입니다. 있다가도 없게 하시는 하나님인 것입니다. 이것을 복과 징계로 구별하시면 안됩니다. 커지게 하시는 것은 신앙생활을 잘해서 복을 주신 것이고, 멸하게 하시는 것은 신앙에 문제가 있어서 징계를 하신 것이라는 법의 시각으로 구별하고 판단하지 않아야 하는 것입니다.

 

 

하나님은 우리의 뜻이나 신앙의 여부, 행함과는 무관하게 일하십니다. 이것을 욥에게서 확인할 수 있습니다. 1장에서 언급되는 욥의 철저한 신앙생활과 무관하게 욥을 재앙의 현장으로 끌어가심으로써 그것을 보여줍니다. 그러므로 ‘믿음으로 살면 복 주신다’는 것은 성경에 없는 내용으로 치부하면 됩니다.

 

 

그렇다면 ‘하나님을 믿어야 할 이유가 뭔가?’라는 생각이 들지 않습니까? 이 또한 신앙을 오해하고 있는 증거일 뿐입니다. 왜냐하면 우리가 스스로 믿어야 할 이유를 가지고 하나님을 찾은 것이 아니라 하나님이 이유를 가지고 우리에게 찾아오셔서 부르셨기 때문입니다. 그래서 믿음의 이유, 가능성 모두 하나님께 있음을 믿는 것이 믿음입니다.

 

 

자기중심적일 수밖에 없는 우리는 언제나 나를 위한 선택을 하면서 살아갑니다. 우리가 하는 선택 자체가 항상 실패일 수밖에 없음에도 불구하고 실패를 실패로 끝나지 않게 일하시는 분이 하나님입니다. 이것이 하나님의 지혜이고 권능이기에 신자는 하나님의 지혜와 권능에 의해서 삶이 주도되고 있음을 깨닫게 되면서 염려와 걱정을 내려놓게 되는 것입니다. 

 

 

인생을 살아가면서 불안과 염려가 없을 수가 없습니다. 더군다나 믿음이 불안과 염려를 해소시켜 주지도 않습니다. 다만 불안과 염려하는 현실에서 하나님이 누구신가를 끊임없이 물으면서 알아가고자 하게 하십니다. 그리고 어떤 현실에서도 하나님께는 불의함이 없음을 알고 하나님의 인도를 기다리는 것이 믿음으로 사는 삶입니다.

 

 

우리가 부딪히는 모든 현실의 배후에 하나님이 계신다는 것만큼 든든함이 되는 것이 없습니다. 우리의 모든 현실이 하나님의 지혜로 인한 것이라면 우리가 불안해 할 이유가 없습니다. 이 믿음의 자리로 우리를 인도해 가시는 분이 하나님입니다. 모든 삶이 하나님의 손에 있음을 믿는 믿음이 여러분의 힘이 되기 바랍니다.

Law and Relationship

  

With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.

Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.

He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.

He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle.

He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.

He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged.

He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.

He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.

He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man. (Job 12:13-25 KJV)

What is ‘the life of faith’, Christianity emphasizes on? What makes us say we live in the life of faith? Some say, “if we have a recognition of God at present, it is to live in the life of faith.”

  

Further to say as a characteristic of the life of faith, “if we have the recognition in life, we come to love others in relationship, removing hatred, jealousy, and envy as well as worries and anxiety. We come to eradicate evilness and falsehood and build relationship of love and forgiveness in happiness.” Many christians are familiar with what’s been said above because it’s commonly heard in modern Christianity. 

  

Yet, is that so? Taking a step further in consideration, we can immediately find it is far different from our reality. Most of all, what is behind the mind of saying, ‘our worries and anxiety will disappear if we encounter God in life? 

  

Using ‘encountering God’ to remove worries and anxiety for pursuing happiness is from the ignorance of God, revealing nothing but selfishness. Thus, even if one says one walks with God in the mind, it is false because the work of God isn’t for one’s happiness by removing worries and anxiety. 

  

Although it is true that the life of faith is related to encountering and relationship with God, all these are directly linked with ‘knowing God’ because no one can say those without knowing who God is. 

  

Yet, the more we would like to know God, the more we are confused of God. This is what we have seen so far through the Book of Job. 

  

In Verse 13, Job says, “With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.” I am sure it sounds familiar with you too. However, have you ever taken a deep consideration of it? 

  

What does ‘with him is wisdom and strength’ mean? It means that God has wisdom and strength, but how is it related to our daily life? If we believe there is wisdom and strength in God, it is important to know what kind of life this faith brings us to. 

  

If God has wisdom and strength, all of our life is of His wisdom and strength. Right? We must settle this first. If all things in our life are of His wisdom and strength, we can’t judge our life by saying, ‘it’s good’, or ‘it’s bad’ because there is no wisdom in us to judge God’s wisdom. 

  

Yet, Job’s friends consider Job’s situations as the punishment for his sin because they view it not from the wisdom of God but that of the law. What they have said to Job so far is of the lawful point of view. Hence, we can learn that they believed in God in the relationship of law, whose product is ‘encouraging good and punishing evil.’

  

Take a look at Verse 14’ “Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.” Doesn’t it sound weird? 

  

Christians think God is the One to edify the broken, to liberate the captured, and to make losers successful. 

  

Yet, Job says the opposite, saying God breaks down and shuts up a man.

  

We can’t understand such work of God in our knowledge. Thus, if we look at his afflictions as the work of God in His wisdom and strength, even though we don’t know the reason, at least we can’t jump to a conclusion, his sin problem. That’s why the life of faith is difficult because we have to live our life not knowing any reason of things occurring in reality even though we see all things done by His wisdom and strength. 

  

In Verse 15, it says, “Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.” It contradicts our thought of God as well because the richness of God we think is the One for neither drought nor flood. On the contrary, we can’t deny that we would rather think God is the One to wet the dried land and dry the flooded land. 

  

Taking a look at such words of Job, we realize that he might have changed his thought of God while experiencing his inexplicable afflictions. Whereas his friends remain in the lawful perspective, Job moved from the same point of view as theirs to the point where he sees himself done by God’s work in His wisdom. Don’t you think this change is the wisdom and strength of God? 

  

Based on what’s been told by Job, think of what he meant. There is no aspect of God to make one prosperous by removing worries and anxiety or happy by giving peace. This is what he learned of God in his difficult time.

  

Think of Job, getting to learn who God is by taking a look at Verses 23 to 25, “He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again. He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way. They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.”

  

Even though we want God to magnify us and our value, the God we encounter in reality is the One to destroy us as well. God creates existence and ceases it. We can’t think of it as blessing and curse like judging things in two ways: prosperity for devoted life for the life of faith and loss for the punishment of sin matters. 

  

The work of God is done regardless of our life of faith or behaviors. We can see that through Job. In spite of Job’s perfect life of faith, God leads him to the disastrous life. Thus, if one says, “God will bless us if we live a good life of faith”, discard what you’ve heard as unbiblical.

  

Then, don’t you come up with an idea, ‘if so, what is the reason to believe in God?’ Yet, this question is another evidence of misconceptions of faith because God has come and called us with the reason we believe in God in Him, not in us. Therefore, the faith is to believe that there is the reason and possibility all in God. 

  

We, who can’t be out of being self-centered, live choosing all for our own benefits and happiness, in other word, our own glory. It is God, who makes our failing decisions not end in failure. Since this is the wisdom and strength of God, as believers are realizing the truth, they are led to put their worries and anxiety aside, knowing their life is being held and guided in His wisdom and strength. 

  

In fact, there is no moment free from worries and anxiety in life. Besides, faith doesn’t remove them as we would. Yet, faith makes us ask ourselves who God is, wanting to know even more in the life of full of worries and anxiety. Furthermore, it is the life of faith that one lives one’s life, waiting for His direction, knowing there is no evil in God’s way.

  

There is no better comfort than knowing the fact that there is God behind all things happening in the world. There must be no reason for us to be anxious about anything since our reality is of His wisdom. God always brings us into the seat of faith. I hope you will be strengthened in faith, knowing all in God’s hand!
