<본문>

7.이제 모든 짐승에게 물어 보라 그것들이 네게 가르치리라 공중의 새에게 물어 보라 그것들이 또한 네게 말하리라 

8.땅에게 말하라 네게 가르치리라 바다의 고기도 네게 설명하리라 

9.이것들 중에 어느 것이 여호와의 손이 이를 행하신 줄을 알지 못하랴 

10.모든 생물의 생명과 모든 사람의 육신의 목숨이 다 그의 손에 있느니라 

11.입이 음식의 맛을 구별함 같이 귀가 말을 분간하지 아니하느냐 

12.늙은 자에게는 지혜가 있고 장수하는 자에게는 명철이 있느니라 

 

 

<설교>

하나님께서 욥을 인도해 가시는 방식은 세상의 이해와 지혜로는 도무지 그 내막을 알 수 없습니다. 비록 하나님을 알고 하나님을 믿는 신자라 해도 욥이 겪는 삶을 보면서 하나님이 왜 그러한 방식으로 욥을 다루시고 인도하시는지에 대한 답을 알기가 쉽지 않은 것입니다. 왜냐하면 신앙의 삶이 완벽했던 욥이 재앙을 겪는 것은 신에 대한 세상의 지식이나 신이 일하는 방식 등에서 크게 어긋나기 때문입니다. 

 

 

그래서 욥은 소발의 말에 대해서 “너희만 참으로 백성이로구나 너희가 죽으면 지혜도 죽겠구나 나도 너희 같이 생각이 있어 너희만 못하지 아니하니 그 같은 일을 누가 알지 못하겠느냐”는 말로 반박합니다.

 

 

욥의 친구들이 욥에게 하는 말을 보면 마치 욥이 재앙을 겪는 이유와 그 내막을 잘 알고 있는 것처럼 말합니다. 그리고 그에 대한 해결 방법가지 제시합니다. 그것을 소발은 죄를 멀리 하고 불의가 장막에 있지 않게 하는 것으로 말합니다. 

 

 

이것이 욥의 친구들이 알고 있던 신앙의 지혜였지만 욥에게는 지혜로 여겨지지 않았습니다. 왜냐하면 세상은 결코 친구들이 아는 방식대로 흘러가지 않았기 때문입니다. 그 중에 하나가 죄를 멀리 하는 삶을 산다고 해서 환난에서 벗어나는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 재앙이 있기 전의 욥의 삶이 철저하게 죄를 멀리하는 것이었기 때문입니다.

 

 

그래서 욥은 “네가 하나님의 오묘함을 어찌 능히 측량하며 전능자를 어찌 능히 완전히 알겠느냐 하늘보다 높으시니 네가 무엇을 하겠으며 스올보다 깊으시니 네가 어찌 알겠느냐”(7,8절)는 말로 하나님이 하시는 일은 인간이 알 수 없고 이해할 수 없음을 토로하는 것입니다. 

 

 

그럼에도 불구하고 기독교인이라는 사람들은 마치 하나님도 하나님이 하시는 일도 잘 알고 있는 것처럼 말합니다. 그래서 당연한 것처럼 ‘신앙생활 잘하면 복 받는다’는 말을 하는 것입니다. 하지만 과연 삶에서의 경험이 그 말처럼 되어 진다고 할 수 있을까요? 전혀 그렇지 않습니다.

 

 

욥의 친구들의 말도 현실에서 그대로 경험되지 않습니다. 그들이 알고 있는 하나님이 아니고 그들의 말대로 일하시지도 않기 때문입니다. 그것은 하나님이 창조하신 세상일에서도 고스란히 드러납니다. 그래서 욥은 자연만물에서 드러나는 일들로 그들의 말에 대해 반박하는 것입니다. 

 

 

욥이 6절에서 “강도의 장막은 형통하고 하나님을 진노하게 하는 자는 평안하니 하나님이 그의 손에 후히 주심이니라”고 말하는데 이것이 우리가 접하는 세상의 현실임을 부인할 수 없습니다. 믿음의 보상, 또는 믿음의 열매로 기대하는 형통과 평안이 강도의 장막이나 하나님을 진노하는 자에게도 찾아오는 것이 현실인데 이러한 현실을 어떻게 해석해야 하느냐는 것입니다.

 

 

지금의 교회에서 하는 말들도 대부분이 욥의 친구들의 말과 다르지 않습니다. 잘하면 복 받고 문제가 있으면 죄를 고백하고 회개하면 된다는 사고방식을 믿음의 지혜로 간주하는 것이 엘리바스, 빌닷, 소발, 이들의 생각과 다르지 않습니다. 그렇다면 욥의 말은 현대 교회를 향한 반박이며 우리의 사고방식에 대한 반박이라고 할 수 있습니다. 하나님을 안다고 생각하는 우리에게 ‘아니다. 너희는 하나님을 알지 못한다’고 소리치는 것입니다.

 

 

7-9절의 “이제 모든 짐승에게 물어 보라 그것들이 네게 가르치리라 공중의 새에게 물어 보라 그것들이 또한 네게 말하리라 땅에게 말하라 네게 가르치리라 바다의 고기도 네게 설명하리라 이것들 중에 어느 것이 여호와의 손이 이를 행하신 줄을 알지 못하랴”는 말을 생각해 보십시오.

 

 

여러분은 자연 만물을 보면서 무엇을 생각하게 됩니까? 우리는 세상에서 되어지는 모든 일을 하나님이 행하시는 것으로 받아들입니다. 자연 또한 하나님이 움직이신다고 말합니다. 이 말은 흔히 말하는 자연재해라는 것도 하나님이 하신 일이라는 뜻입니다. 그렇다면 자연으로 발생하는 사건들을 보면서 사랑과 은혜의 하나님을 경험하신다고 생각합니까? 그 모든 일들이 납득이 되십니까?

 

 

여러분은 자연의 움직임에 의해서 수많은 사람이 죽고 다치는 것을 보고 들었을 것입니다. 과연 그 일들을 욥 친구들의 말처럼 죄를 기준 해서 구분할 수 있을까요? 죄가 있기 때문에 재해를 입었고 재해와 상관없는 것은 죄를 짓지 않았기 때문이라고 공식화하여 말할 수 있을까요? 만약 그렇다고 한다면 그 사람은 자기 생각과 지식에만 갇혀서 판단하는 무지하고 어리석고 맹목적인 사람이라고 하지 않을 수 없습니다.

 

 

자연은 양육강식의 법칙으로 존재합니다. 약자는 강자에게 먹히게 되어있고 이것이 자연이 유지되는 법칙이고 질서입니다. 그리고 우리가 살아가는 세상도 이러한 질서와 법칙에 의해 유지됩니다. 그것이 세상은 어둠이라는 증거입니다. 

 

 

그런데 어둠에 있으면서도 어둠을 간파하지 못하고 어둠을 즐기기 위해 하나님을 찾는다면 그것을 어떻게 설명해야 할까요? 약육강식이 질서와 법칙으로 자리하고 있는 세상에서 강자가 되는 것을 복과 은혜라고 떠들고 있는 교회의 현실은 또 어떻게 해석해야 할까요?

 

 

우리가 할 수 있는 말은 하나님을 알지 못한다는 것입니다. 우리는 근본적으로 하나님에 대해 무지한 존재입니다. 그것을 현실에서 경험하는 것입니다. 그 경험을 통해서 욥이 알아가는 것은 하나님이 자신이 알고 있던 하나님이 아니었다는 것입니다. 죄악을 멀리 버리고 불의가 장막에 있지 못하게 하는 것이 신앙의 전부로 생각했던 것이 어리석음이었음을 알아가는 것입니다.

 

 

지금도 기독교인들이 생각하는 신앙은 죄를 멀리 하고 선을 행하면서 말씀을 지키기 위해 최선을 다하는 삶을 살면 평안의 삶을 살 수 있다고 생각하지만 하나님이 다스리시는 세상의 현실은 결코 그러한 계산에 맞게 드러나는 것이 아님을 알아야 합니다. 이것을 알지 못하면 어리석은 지혜에 매몰된 거짓된 신앙으로만 살아갈 뿐입니다.

 

 

10절의 “모든 생물의 생명과 모든 사람의 육신의 목숨이 다 그의 손에 있느니라”는 말을 들어 보십시오. 이 말도 기독교인들에게는 아주 익숙할 것입니다. 소위 우리의 생사를 주관하시는 하나님을 말하는 것입니다. 

 

 

세상의 모든 생명을 하나님이 주관하시기에 우리가 살고 죽는 것도 하나님께 달렸다는 것이 기독교의 믿음입니다. 이것이 우리의 믿음이라면 기독교인은 생과 사를 하나님이 하시는 일로 받아들여야 합니다. 하지만 또 한편으로 교회는 장수의 복이라는 것을 말합니다. 오래 사는 것도 하나님이 베푸시는 복이라는 것입니다. 그러면 오래 살지 못하는 것은 오래 산 사람에 비해서 죄를 더 많이 지었기 때문입니까? 이 또한 어떤 사람인가를 불문하고 장수하는 사람이 많다는 것을 생각하면 현실과는 맞지 않습니다.

 

 

그래서 신자는 현실을 살아가면서 욥처럼 당황해야 하고 갈등과 원망과 고민이 있어야 합니다. 그것이 신자 되는 조건이라는 뜻이 아니라 우리가 생각하고 원하는 하나님의 일하심을 세상에서 전혀 만날 수 없다는 사실로 당황하는 경험이 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 

 

 

그리고 하나님이 누구시고 어떤 뜻을 가지시고 일하시는가를 성경을 통해서 알아가는 것에 마음을 두어야 합니다. 그것이 어떤 현실에서도 흔들리지 않는 참된 신앙의 세계로 들어가는 일에 필요합니다. 

 

 

12절에 보면 “늙은 자에게는 지혜가 있고 장수하는 자에게는 명철이 있느니라”고 말합니다.

 

 

사람이 오래 살수록 경험하게 되는 것은 세상의 일들이 우리의 생각과 기대와 계산대로 되지 않는다는 것입니다. 인간을 위해 일하시는 하나님이 아님을 경험하게 되는 것입니다. 심지어 신앙생활을 잘한다 해서 평안의 복을 누리는 것이 아님도 경험하게 됩니다. 그래서 자기의 생각과 기대를 포기하고 하나님의 말씀 안에서 하나님이 누구신가를 알아가고자 하게 되는 것입니다. 

 

 

그렇게 우리는 하나님의 인도를 받고 있습니다. 하나님이 욥을 인도하시는 것처럼 우리를 인도하십니다. 우리의 잘못된 생각과 착각과 오해에도 불구하고 하나님은 우리를 믿음의 길로 인도하심을 알게 하십니다. 그래서 신앙은 바른 행동을 하고 바르게 사는 것이 아니라 바른 길로 가지 못한다 해도 하나님이 우리를 놓지 않으시고 믿음의 길로 인도하심을 믿는 것입니다. 그것이 참된 지혜의 믿음입니다.

 

Chapter 31

  

Wisdom against Wisdom

  

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:

Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?

In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat?

With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding. (Job 12:7-12 KJV)

  

(Sermon)

  

The way of God’s leading Job is mysterious for our understanding and wisdom. Even if one believes in God, one can hardly find why God is treating Job in such way because the disaster Job, perfect in life of faith, is experiencing is something against the world’s knowledge and work of God.

  

That’s why Job is opposing to the words of Zophar, saying, “No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.” 

  

The friends of Job sound as if they knew well the cause and the behind story of Job’s afflictions if we take a look at their words only. In addition, they even suggest to him for a solution, a part of which is in the words of Zophar, “If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.”

  

Although this was the wisdom of Job’s friends, it was not wisdom to Job because he knew the world wouldn’t go in the direction they thought it would be, one of which is that one can’t get out of hardships even if one puts off one’s iniquity. His life had been perfect before he received the afflictions. 

  

That’s why he is saying men can’t know the work of God nor comprehend it in his words, “But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.”

  

Nevertheless, christians say as if they knew God and the work of God well, resulting in saying, “if you have a good life of faith, you will be blessed.” Yet, can we say our reality is going according to the statement above? Not at all.

  

The words of Job’s friends aren’t experienced in reality either because neither God nor the work of God is according to their ideas, which is also proven by the way of God’s creation. That’s why Job is against them by using natural phenomena. 

  

In Verse 6, Job says, “The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.” We can’t deny what he is saying is what we are experiencing in the world. He is tossing an inquiry of how we should understand the reality that rewards of life of faith are given to robbers and those provoking God. 

  

What preachers are saying at podium in modern Christianity is not far from the words of Job’s friends, devoting to God brings blessings in return and repenting as a solution of sin matters. Then, we can say the words of Job are against modern Christianity and our thoughts of God. To us who think, ‘I know God’, he is crying, “no, you don’t.”

  

Think of what he says in Verses 7 to 9, “But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?”

  

When you look at nature, what comes to your mind? We agree that God is reigning all things in the world, including nature, which should also mean natural disasters are of God. Do you think you are experiencing the love and grace of God in the disasters we see? Can you understand all these?

  

You must have heard people died and got injured by nature. Do you think you can judge all those according to sin problems as Job’s friends say? Can you openly say receiving disasters is because of having sinned and not receiving them is not having sinned? If one says yes, we can say one is merely boxed by one’s thoughts and knowledge, blind and ignorant of the truth.

  

Nature runs on ‘the survival of the fittest.’ The weak are eaten by the strong, the nature and principle of nature. The world in which we live runs the same, the evidence that the world is darkness. 

  

Yet, how would it be possible to explain if we are in the darkness, not realizing it and seeking for God to pursue the darkness? Furthermore, how would it be understood that people in modern Christianity are saying the strong in power is the blessing and the grace of God? 

  

In fact, what we can say is that we don’t know God. We are fundamentally ignorant of God, which is experienced in our reality. What Job is realizing in this experience is the God Job knew is not the true God, finding that it is fool to think that a good life of faith is to put off sins and not let wickedness dwell in the tabernacle. 

  

Although people in modern Christianity still think the way of peaceful life is to purge sins and do good deeds, we should be aware that the world that God is governing has nothing to do with the idea. If we don’t know what’s been described above, we might end up living in falsehood of faith.

  

Listen to what he says in Verse 10, “In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” It sounds familiar to us. He says God controls everything. 

  

It is the faith of Christianity that our life and death depend on God since He is ruling all. If it’s our faith, we must accept our life and death as the work of God. Yet, on the other hand, christians say longevity is a blessing God gives. Then, is it correct to say that those lived shorter than others because they had sinned more than those who lived longer? No one can say yes because we can see many live long no matter what kind of people they are. 

  

Therefore, believers are to be confounded, conflicted, dissatisfied and worried like Job. I don’t mean it is a requirement to be a believer but we ought to be bewildered by the fact that God doesn’t work in the way that we want Him to. 

  

Then, we should keep in mind that we would like to know who God is and what His will is through the Bible. This is what we need for the world of true faith, which never falters. 

  

In Verse 12, it says, “With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.” 

  

What we are realizing more as we are living longer is that things in the world are not going in the way that we want them to be. We do find that God is not the one working for us. We even learn that a good life of faith doesn’t bring blessing of peaceful life, by which we come to know who God is by putting off our thoughts and expectations.

  

We are being guided in the way stated above. God is leading us as He did to Job. In spite of our misconceptions and mistakes of God, He is letting us know that God is bringing us to the path of faith. Thus, faith is not something we do good but to believe that God is holding us on the path of faith regardless of what we do. This is the faith of true wisdom!
